Winchester SX4 rifle

By Sylvain Lessard

You are currently watching me as I try out my new shotgun. I love clay pigeon shooting. I find that it is good practice and good preparation for the upcoming duck hunting season.

This year, I have decided to take the leap. . . I bought myself a shotgun, a semi-automatic. I didn't want to buy it out of impulse, so I went to visit an arms adviser at Latullipe and he asked me the right questions.

"Sylvain, what do you want to do with your gun?"

- Well, I want to hunt duck. . . I want to hunt waterfowl.

"Why a semi-automatic? Because there is a mechanical system anyway, whether it is initiated by gas or inertia."

So I said: "You know, I want close shots. And I am tired of hunting with a break-action shotgun. I want a gun with a 3 1/2" chamber for modern munitions, etc." I added that I didn't have the budget for an Italian shotgun, although they are very good. "You know, my budget is rather limited!"

Ah! All right! That's when he said: "I have something for you."

That’s when he pulled out the new Winchester, the SX4. "This is quite a shotgun, Sylvain. It was specifically designed for hunters. They thought about what hunters needed."

Among others, the camo. This is the new Max-5 pattern. It is also available with other camouflage patterns, but I like the Max-5. It goes unnoticed in rush beds, the habitat where I hunt.

He added that the synthetic stocks used to have a bit of a drum sound, that they were hollow. But they have now solved the problem. Now, the gun looks solid and there's no resonance when I hit it.

It’s easy to clean and easy to disassemble. He tells me that it has some interesting features for me as a duck hunter:

"You will notice that the bolt handle is oversized. Now, imagine that it is fall and that you are wearing gloves: you will still be able to operate it smoothly."

Same thing goes for the bolt release button: it is also oversized. This way, I don't have to look for it on the bolt box. Even with thick gloves, I can find it and operate it without any issues. The same goes for the button behind the trigger guard, it is easily accessible.

They placed a large button there, to ensure that I am always able to activate the safety on my gun. The trigger guard's shape allows to insert cartridges in the tubular magazine with ease. A beautiful barrel that comes with three chokes!

Fibre optic front sight allows me to locate my game with relative ease. Now, if you put all that together, including its relatively light weight, its nice recoil pad (comfortable even with powerful loads) and the selling price. . .

It's this year's best choice! I am very, very satisfied with my Winchester Super-X4. By the way, I am having so much fun with my little clay pigeon sessions! I try any type of ammunition and it digests them all, one after the other.

So, if you don't mind, I'm gonna go back to having fun. . .
