Maintenance of a crossbow

By Steeve Gosselin

"Hi everyone. This is Steeve Gosselin for Quebec Hunting.

Today, I will be talking about maintenance. Modern crossbows don't require much. They are made of aluminum and composite materials. However, a few precautions may be useful. Let's have a look together.

Every shot sends vibrations to the weapon. Before each season, you should tighten all bolts. The application of Blue Loctite could be necessary. The bolts and nuts, the trigger system and some mechanical parts are made of steel.

Applying oil on these parts can help prevent rust. The application of wax on the rope will extend its life and preserve its properties. A lubricant applied to the flight groove after each shooting session will reduce friction with the string and prevent premature wear.

The string cutter, which protects the centre of the string will eventually wear out because of the friction with the flight groove. When showing signs of wear, it can be replaced for a fraction of the price of the string. Absorbers can be damaged by repeated contact with the string. I recommend turning them after each shooting session. Maintain a minimum distance of 1/8 to 1/4 inch between the absorbers and the string. To change the distance, simply remove the string, turn it a few times and place it back.

Hunting conditions are difficult. A good carrying case is a good way to prevent breakage. Make sure the crossbow and its case are dry before you put everything back together. Each crossbow has its own specifications. I recommend that you to read your instruction manual for more details."
