Over the past few years, more and more running enthusiasts have been observed the city. I'm one of them! I've been running for several years and in the fall, I like to put my road shoes aside and lace my trail shoes in order to vary my workout, naturally, but also to enjoy the colourful landscapes that nature offers. However, autumn also rhymes with cooler temperatures. Clothing must therefore be adapted. Below are some tips to make the most of your workouts in nature.
When Mother Nature is on our side and there isn't much wind, a simple base layer is sufficient for outdoor workouts. The base layer should be worn directly on the skin. Its purpose is to remove moisture to keep us dry. Cotton should therefore be avoided because it retains moisture when wet. Instead, a merino wool or synthetic fibre sweater is preferred. You can wear a thin Helly Hansen layer or a moderately thick Sugoi, depending on the temperature. When the weather is a bit cooler, I like to overlay both, the first layer keeping me dry and the second, keeping me warm enough not to feel cold.
When wind or rain joins the party, we need a bit more protection. Hence the importance of having a softshell windproof coat in your wardrobe. In addition to protecting us from the wind, this type of coat is water-resistant and allows moisture to escape. Preferably, I choose a soft and extensible coat to preserve a good freedom of movement while I run.
Although most models have reflective logos, I also like to choose colourful clothes for increased visibility.
For the lower body, I choose a training capri for its comfort and flexibility. Like all other workout clothes, it must also allow moisture to escape. Even if it doesn't necessarily protect me from the wind, it keeps my muscles warm.
When I work out, I like to be as light as possible. An essential item that can be hidden in a coat pocket is a Buff scarf. I always carry one along because of its versatility and lightness. It can be worn as a headband, neck cover or even a toque. And most importantly, it doesn't take up much space!
Also, when I leave for a long outing and need to bring food and water, I use a small bottle that is held in hand. When it comes to bringing a gel or an energy bar, I carry the Nathan Mirage Pak waist pack.
For my feet, I choose a pair of shoes that is adapted to trail running, which must be supple and light, and have soft enough spikes to provide a good grip on the trail. Some people prefer a waterproof shoe. For my part, I prefer to optimize moisture removal.
Looking forward to meeting you on the trails!
