Choosing the right fishing line

When I was younger, I fished brook trout for a long time using the same rod I used for pike. The day I hooked my first river trout with an ultralight rod, I felt the bite so clearly and had such a blast playing the fish that I realized right away how the right gear choices and investments can completely change the game and boost your success rate on the water. Among those choices, selecting the right fishing line is crucial.

The Importance of Fishing Line Based on Technique and Target Species

Like most anglers, I spool my reels with high-quality braided line. For trout and bass, I run 10 lb test braid tied to an 8 to 10 lb test fluorocarbon leader. For walleye and trolling, I step up to 15 to 20 lb test braid with a matching 15 to 20 lb test leader. Keep in mind that line diameter determines not only its strength, but also its density and sink rate. In many situations, this makes all the difference. A thinner diameter cuts through the water better, presents your bait more naturally, tricks more fish, and significantly boosts your catch rate.

Leader Line: Monofilament or Fluorocarbon?

The choice comes down to your budget and specific needs. Personally, I always fish with a fluorocarbon leader. It lets me fish with a finer finesse approach while adding just enough stretch to set the hook cleanly and play the fish effectively. My main reasons for using it are invisibility and abrasion resistance, as braided line doesn't hold up well when rubbing against rocks or submerged timber. Investing in quality line will also prevent lost fish and lost lures.
